Southern Baked Mac and Cheese is a creamy and delicious comfort food that features turkey bacon for a tasty twist.

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 6 slices turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook the macaroni according to package instructions, drain, and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter and whisk in flour to create a roux. Cook for about 2 minutes.
  4. Gradually add milk and cream, stirring constantly until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in cheese until melted.
  6. Add in eggs, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  7. Combine the cheese mixture with the cooked macaroni and turkey bacon.
  8. Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and top with breadcrumbs.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden and bubbly.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add crushed red pepper flakes to the cheese sauce.
